In this final part of the Top-Down Mixing series, we take the same approach we used with the drums and apply it to the rest of the production. Starting with the bigger picture, we’ll gradually work down through the mix, making decisions only where they’re needed.

Intro – Completing The Mix Preview Chapter 1 – Shaping The Mix Bus Chapter 2 – Shaping The Synth Bus Chapter 3 – Controlling The Bass Bus Chapter 4 – Shaping The Vocal Bus

Course Details

We start at the very top of the mix, using EQ, saturation, compression and limiting to gently shape the overall sound. The aim is not to fix problems, but to establish tone, cohesion, energy and level before moving deeper into the individual groups.

Next, we treat the synths as a complete musical section rather than a collection of individual sounds. We’ll look at tonal balance, dynamics, width and processing techniques that help the synths sit naturally within the overall mix.

Here we focus on creating a powerful but controlled low end. We’ll explore compression, EQ, saturation and the relationship between the bass and drums, helping the bottom end feel solid without overwhelming the rest of the mix.

Finally, we bring the vocals together as one cohesive section. We’ll use EQ, compression, saturation and effects to create consistency, presence and character while making sure the vocals sit naturally within the finished record.
